How to Save Water During a Drought.

'Water water everywhere and not a drop to drink'.

Maybe not quite so bad yet, but if we don't save it here in England and we have a dry summer things may not be quite so good.

In Peterborough, in the East of England we are already subject to a hose pipe ban and it is only 9th April 2012 as I write this.

The last winter was long, cold and wet and over the Easter holiday it has been very wet, yet we are still engulfed in the middle of a water shortage.

Water bills continue to rise like all other utilities and we get less and less for our money.

Enough of the sob story. The idea of this article is to give hints and tips on saving water so hopefully you will avoid having to worry if you are forced with a ban on using water.

Below you will find my top 10 water saving techniques which work for me. My household water bill is based on water used as I am fitted with a water meter. Every drop I can save is important

Tip 1

Fit a water butt in your garden to catch rainwater from the roof of your house and or outbuilding such as a shed or a greenhouse.

Check out the offering from Amazon and purchase your own water catcher. Start saving water as soon as you fit it.

Tip 2

Put a brick or similar in you toilet cistern. This will displace the water so that less is needed to fill the cistern and so give a shorter flush.

The perfect item is this dive brick from Amazon. Why put a dirty house brick in you toilet system when you can buy this ideal item. Pop it in and save water with every flush of your toilet.

If you don't fancy that idea there are products you can get from your water company in the uk, but I am not sure about other countries. Check out the Anglian Water link below and you will see at least 2 products you can get from them to add to your cistern which will displace the water and they claim it will save at least a litre of water per flush. Just think how many times per day your family flush. You could be saving 20 litres a day!

Tip 3

Fix leaking taps /fawcetts around the home. Every drip will waste water. If you can't fix a drip buy something to catch it in.

Again another great product found when searching on Amazon this locking container to catch the drips allowing you to use the water elsewhere such as for watering your garden plants or house plants.

Tip 4

When washing dishes, don't run the water down the sink. Run water into a bowl and wash dishes in it. When finished use the left over water to water the plants in your garden.

Tip 5

Take a shower instead of a bath or you could even shower with a 'friend' if you have a large enough shower enclosure! Also consider fitting a water saving attachment to you shower head.

A must have for use with your shower. Reduces the amount of water allowed to flow through your shower head but has improved water spray capabilities.

Tip 6

For cold drinks, make up a pitcher and keep in the fridge instead of running a cold tap everytime you want to make one.

Ideal for putting in the fridge these water pitchers from Amazon are airtight and will keep your juice fresh for hours.

Tip 7

Wash fruit and veg in a pan instead of under a running tap. Consider using a veggie wash product then you can clean in a pan or a bowl.

Tip 8

Only wash your clothing when you have full loads for your washing machine. Also wash less often where possible and certainly in times of high demand on water in driught conditions.

Tip 9

Fill up garden ponds with water you have collected from the roof of your house or outdoor garden building. Better for your fish than using water from the tap as well.

If you do ever have to use tap water make sure that you use a product such as the one shown to condition your water so as not to harm your fish.

Tip 10

Wash your car with the new dry wash products which are now available. The ultimate water saving tip. Probably better for your car paintwork as there will be no sunlight damage to the paint whilst drying off.

May seem a big layout in terms of initial cost but the benefits will be well worth it and will maintain your paintwork in tip top condition all year round. Will also enable you to wash your car in cold conditions. You will agree there is nothing worse than washing a car in freezing temperatures.
