The EPA announced this morning they would delay rules on capturing
air pollution at gas wells where hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is
going on. This follows several decisions by the EPA not to charge drilling companies with polluting groundwater near the wells.
Fracking is a controversial procedure. Many homeowners near wells
have complained that their well water is no longer drinkable. Studies
have found that fracking can cause earthquakes under the right
conditions. It’s also a heavy user of freshwater in the middle of a
drought here in Texas.
In response to citizen concerns, some drilling companies are looking
at cleaning and reusing the fracking fluids. A few municipalities have
started requiring it, but not many.
The EPA will discuss the delay in fracking pollution rules this afternoon.
