Oman represents one of the fastest growing power and water sectors in
the Middle East region with electricity and desalinated water demand
expected to increase until 2017 at an average growth rate of about 9 per
cent per year according to the Oman Power and Water Procurement
Company’s 7-Year Statement 2011-1017.
To face the increasing demand, Oman is investing in strengthening power
and desalination water generation capacity and in maximising the network
efficiency to improve costs and energy saving benefits and to optimise
the rational use of resources.
Energy efficiency strategies as well as the ongoing and planned power
and water projects will be among the key topics to be discussed at the
Oman Power and Water Summit 2012 developed in co-operation with the
Public Authority for Electricity and Water (PAEW) and with the official
support of the Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources,
Oman Power and Water Procurement Company, Authority for Electricity
Regulation, Electricity Holding Company and Rural Areas Electricity
Company.
As stated by Mohammed Abdullah al Mahrouqi, Chairman of PAEW, “Improving
energy efficiency is one of PAEW’s key objectives. We hope that the
second edition of the Oman Power and Water Summit will attract even more
local and international industry experts to share their ideas on
optimising the use of electricity and water resources and enhancing
energy efficiency.
“We look forward to hearing about policies and strategies implemented
abroad that we can learn from and use to adapt best practices to respond
to our country’s needs.”
Organised by Global Exhibitions and Conferences (GEC) and International
Quality and Productivity Centre (IQPC) the first day of the summit on
May 6 will be dedicated to energy efficiency. Local and international
authorities will share their perspectives and experiences on the
development of cost-effective policies and incentive regulations to
promote energy efficiency investment as well as technologies and green
building practices that can improve operational efficiency and cost
saving benefits.
The high-level support received for the four-day summit taking place at
the Grand Hyatt Muscat during May 6-9, reflects the strong regional and
international interest in Oman’s dynamic power and water sector.
Speakers from Oman’s power and water authorities and companies will
address the gathering. Among the association partners already confirmed
are the Clean Energy Business Council, Euro-Mediterranean Association
for Cooperation and Development, International Private Water
Association, Oman Water Society, Emirates Solar Industry Association,
Saudi Arabia Solar Industry Association, Middle East Desalination
Research Center, Smart Energy Demand Coalition and VaasaETT.
