"Water
and Toilets for Kenyan Schools!" will be the Call to Action on
Saturday, 24 March 2012, in Kayole, Nairobi. Up to 1,000 Kenyan school
children and youths will join the the World Walks for Water and
Sanitation campaign to demand water and toilets for formal and
non-formal schools in Nairobi. At the same time, the walk will mobilise
people to raise public awareness for the lack of appropriate water and
sanitation infrastructure in Nairobi’s schools and the devastating
effects this has on learning, health and overall well-being.
Sanitation
in particular remains a massive challenge in schools in low income
neighbourhoods. A 2004 estimate indicates that in public schools in
Nairobi, 1 toilet is shared by about 64 students. The situation in the
Kayole
area, which is located approximately 20km east of Nairobi’s Central
Business District, is similar. The walk in Kayole is organized by WASH United in partnership with its national partner, the Mathare Youth Sports
Association,
(MYSA). WASH United partners will be organizing two more walks in
Africa, one in Lesotho (TED) and one in Uganda (UWASNET).
